Updated Campaign for Y'KHIEM, A FORGOTTEN SOLDIER

Donation protected
The old campaign raised $1,200.00 and this is an UPDATED campaign for Y'Khiem:

Y'KHIEM, A FORGOTTEN SOLDIER

Y’Khiem Ayun, a Montagnard of the Rhade tribe, fought at the side of America’s soldiers in the Vietnam War.  He suffered multiple injuries, but survived and came to the United States as a refugee. Now he needs help.

I met Mr. Ayun in 2017 when he came to my office at the Montagnard Dega Association in Greensboro, NC.  He had an upcoming doctor appointment in a nearby town and did not have any way to get there. I was able to find a volunteer to drive him, and one of our interns went along to interpret for him.

I brought his case to the attention of Ms. Vung Ksor, the Refugee Health Coordinator at the Center for New North Carolinians.  Ms. Ksor and I learned more about Mr. Ayun and about his medical needs.

Y’Khiem Ayun served with the U. S. Special Forces in Vietnam between 1967 and 1971 with the Mobile Strike Force Command (MIKE Force). He continued to serve with MIKE Force under the ARVN until 1975. Today he carries bullet fragments throughout his body from multiple wounds, which have caused him to suffer long term health effects. After the war ended, Mr. Ayun, like many other Montagnards, was arrested and imprisoned.  After a few years, he was released, and returned to his home village, but he was never a free man. He never married or had children. He considers himself a Forgotten Soldier.

Mr. Ayun came to the U. S. in June 2002, along with many other Montagnard refugees who had fought bravely on the American side and who had been persecuted by the Vietnamese government as a result.  He resettled in Greensboro, where he struggled to learn English, but managed to work for some years to support himself.

Now he is 65 years old with no money and with no family, and he is unable to work due to the injuries he suffered fighting in support of our American troops. He has had two surgeries because of his wounds. In 2014, he had a stroke, and his health has declined.  He is on Medicaid and gets Food Stamps, but has no other sources of income. Our goal is to raise $5,000 to help him with medical copays, prescription costs, and to make his life easier. He helped American troops in their hour of need, and now he needs help in return.

Sincerely,

Liana Adrong, Vung Ksor
