Help Save Cats and Kittens

Donation protected
This past year has been a crazy one for our family in terms of homeless cat and kitten rescues in the Charlotte area.  In addition to those we have found in our own neighborhood and worked to trap, medically treat, socialize, and find homes for—we have also had friends, past adopters, neighbors, and even our vet practice reach out to us about cats and kittens in need of help.

Thus far in 2020, we have rescued 11 young adult/almost adult cats and 17 kittens; and we are just private residents, doing this to help these amazing little creatures and our community.

We have provided medical care and food for all of these wonderful felines primarily at our expense, though I do want to acknowledge and thank several of our adopters and several kind souls in our community who have donated a combined total of $1,000.  All in all, 2020 vet fees alone for the care of these cats and kittens have so far exceeded $16,000.

We still need to provide additional medical care for the cats and kittens we are fostering, including laser surgery for a young female named Lady Jane Grey, who has been burdened with so much hardship in her short life, including being found collapsed at a busy intersection in Denver and then put out of the house of her initial rescuer to, once again, fend for herself.  What is truly amazing is to see how sweet and joyful this little girl remains, despite some people’s cruelty.

Lady Jane came to us with entropion, an incredibly painful condition where the animal’s fur/eyelashes turn inward and constantly scratch its corneas.  Her eyelids also did not open as widely as normal at the edges.  We paid for eye surgery right away to repair the entropion, so she would not continue to suffer unimaginable pain.

While her eyes will never look normal and she has suffered some loss of vision, Lady Jane is no longer hurting from that condition.  She has also had chronic nasal congestion ever since we rescued her.  Working with our vet, we have tried numerous antibiotic, antiviral, and other treatments to no avail.  We believe she has nodules in her sinuses that are the root cause of her continuing problems, as the mucus she sneezes is blood tinged, which is apparently a sign of that condition.  Unfortunately, the nodules did not show up on the skull x-rays we had taken, so laser surgery is her next best hope.

I so much want this awesome, sweet little girl to be able to breathe normally for the first time ever in her short life.  Laser surgery will be at least another $2,000, but it should fix her problems once and for all.  The sad part is we simply cannot afford it right now.

We also have a female cat in our neighborhood we are working creatively to trap in the next day or two (my daughter built a drop trap, since she is wise now to the regular one).  We are pretty certain “Daphne,” as we have named her, is pregnant again; and if we are correct, she is too close to term to go on a two- or three-month waiting list for a spay from one of the low-cost nonprofit organizations.  We do not want her to have another litter for reasons of her health; she just gave birth to seven kittens three months ago.  The only way to prevent her from having any kittens is to spay her as quickly as possible, which will cost $600 to $700 through our regular vet.

Daphne’s six kittens (first known to us), which we have trapped over the past few weeks, have already been to our vet for their initial visit, vaccines, and tests—but they need to return in the next week or so for a second round of shots and dewormers (and then a third time for a final round and a rabies vaccine three to four weeks after that).

Frankly, we are financially overwhelmed at this point.

We are asking for monetary support to continue helping these wonderful animals—specifically the ones discussed above, so they will be healthy and able to go to the forever homes they so deserve.  If you are able to assist, we will be so grateful.
