X-Ray Machine for Northwest AK Pets

Donation protected
*** Update 1/9/20: We are almost there!  We have had a couple very generous private donations who would like to match donations from the public (up to $15,000)!  We have up to January 24 for donations for matching funds (2 weeks)!  Please help the pets of Northwest Alaska to have access to a much needed diagnostic tool!

***Update 10/1/19:  We have found a better option for an x-ray machine that costs less and will still meet our x-ray needs, and have been able to raise some money through fundraising, so we've adjusted our total funds needed to $32,500.***

The Nome Animal House is in need of an x-ray machine for diagnosing pet problems during our veterinary clinics in Northwest Alaska.

The Nome Animal House opened in 2007 in Nome, a small city (and also the hub for many surrounding communities) in Northwest Alaska.  We began offering pet boarding, dog grooming, and selling basic pet supplies.  Over the years, through fundraising efforts, grants, and bank and family loans, we have been able to expand and now have a facility and some basic equipment to be able to host a traveling veterinarian once per month to offer week long veterinary clinics.  The services offered at the Nome Animal House are the only services of this kind available within a 500 mile radius.  During our veterinary clinics, our veterinarian can diagnose and treat many different ailments as well as perform basic surgeries including (but not limited to) spays and neuters.  While the ability to offer these services is a giant leap from not having veterinary services at all in Nome and the surrounding communities, we are finding our veterinary diagnostic capabilities (and as a result, our veterinary treatment) to be extremely hindered by the lack of a x-ray machine.  Every day during our clinic (and some outside of clinic times) we are seeing clients in need of an x-ray.  Some are extremely urgent (intestinal blockages, broken bones, etc), and some are chronic problems that need an x-ray to diagnose and treat (heart problems, lung problems, arthritis and joint problems, etc.).  The closest pet x-ray machine is in the city of Anchorage, 500 air miles away.  The cost and time to send a pet to Anchorage for an x-ray is more than most people can afford and so the problem often times goes untreated, and sometimes results in the death of a pet.

We have researched our options and have found a solution that we feel will meet our needs.  We would like to convert an office room in our building into an x-ray room, and purchase an x-ray machine that will work for all of our x-ray need scenarios.  Through consultations with x-ray technicians, x-ray sales reps, contractors, and electricians, we have come up with a total budget of: $67,550.  We have applied for a couple grants and so far have been awarded $12,500 for the room conversion, and still need $55,050 for the x-ray machine ($49,900) accessories ($1,650), and shipping of equipment ($3,500).

Please keep in mind that because of the way we save a portion of the proceeds from each use of our equipment to put towards equipment replacement, not only would you be funding this specific x-ray machine, but rather you would be providing seed money that will continue to provide funding to always have an x-ray machine at the Nome Animal House.
