We are Sabrina, 33, from Germany and Xavier, 37, born in Jericoacoara and two and a half years ago we opened the Xavi Surf School. 20 years ago Xavier was one of the first local surfers and has encouraged many children to learn how to surf and spend their time in the water instead of on the streets.
In all of Brazil, drug use by children and adolescents is a huge issue. In Jericoacoara, there is very little effort from the city to address problems and offer activities for the children.
Since we started the surf school in 2015, many children have come to the school and if available we are always happy to lend them a surf board. Many children would love to start practicing a water sport, but equipment (especially for wind and kitesurf) is rather costly and most families can't afford it.
So, we decided that it's time to start raising money ourselves, with or without funds from the city, to purchase additional surf equipment.
Three months ago, we started with 9 kids and 3 voluntary instructors. Now, there are already 30 kids and 7 volunteers helping us every Saturday and Sunday morning.
After some games at the beach to warm up and strengthen the group dynamics, Xavier gives some theoretical instructions before heading into the water. Besides surfing, the children learn more about the environment and we collect garbage every 6 weeks.
This is our way to give back to the local community!
At the moment, our equipment is not always suited for the size of the children. We need 12 soft boards in 3 different sizes and 50 rash guards (40 for the kids and 10 for the instructors) to protect everybody from the hot brazilian sun. We will offer the children free equipment to practice during the week after school.
Thank you so much for helping us reach our goal! On behalf of the children, it is sincerely appreciated!
And when you have time, come pay us a visit here in Jeri and catch a wave with the kids :)

All donations will go directly to the project Xavi Surf Kids and will enable the project to maintain equipment, buy new surfboards and rash guards and most of all continue to offer the support and positive focus to the youth of Jericoacoara.
