I took a trip to Africa in 2017 and it changed my life. Though I live in America, part of my heart is still in Africa. Everything is so different there, life is so much more appreciated. People die every day there just because they cannot afford $3.00 worth of Malaria medication. Many of them get one meal a day, if that. So many people die of causes that they cannot afford to treat, where here in the U.S., we get treated every time we are sick. Due to this societal problem of people not being able to get medical treatment, many parents die, leaving behind the children that are left. These children then end up alone and have nowhere to go except to wander the streets and try to fend for themselves. Knowing about this problem, some citizens of the country will see the issue and decide to do something about it. They take in these orphans that are wandering around the city, town or village and feed them, clothe them, give them a place to sleep, pay their school fees so they can attend school, and most importantly, give them love. They can then register with the government, create an organization, and become an official NGO. These extraordinary citizens go above and beyond the role they have been given in society, they put themselves aside and instead, dedicate their lives to being fathers to the fatherless.
These are the children of the Lords Mercy Foundation in Uganda, Africa. Over the time I have known the owner, Ronald, I have seen these children go from having nothing but the clothes on their backs and a building provided by Ronald to sleep in. At the time I met them, they were struggling for food; they would go days without eating, and in all of the pictures and videos I would see of the children, they were wearing their same outfits as always. It broke Ronald's heart that these orphans were without basic necessities. I asked him if they had blankets, he said no. I asked him if they had toothbrushes, he said no. I asked him if they had shoes, he said no. He then shared with me that he has been praying for these necessities for the children and much more. He also wants them to be able to go to school. Since then, I have donated from my personal funds to see that the basic necessities of these children were met. Through teamwork, Ronald and I began by purchasing organization shirts for the children, shoes for the children, blankets for the children, toothbrushes for the children, and a ball for the children to have something to play with. The foundation started to grow and gain donors bit by bit. This past year, we successfully raised enough funds to purchase mattresses for all of the children so they are no longer sleeping on the hard floor. I have gone from witnessing the desperation on Ronald's face to seeing him smiling and standing proud, handing out these supplies to the children.
Apart from the children, widows would come to him and seek shelter. He willingly took them under his wing, although he didn't know how to provide for them. When we purchased the necessities for the children, we also purchased them for the widows. The widows were overjoyed, singing and dancing for having received these things. We provided them with hoes for digging and seeds for planting so that they may be able to grow food for the children. We also purchased a few Bibles for them to share.
There were initially 29 children at the Lords Mercy Foundation. When I asked Ronald what he prays for the children at night, one thing he mentioned was that there were 6 other orphans that would come to him, crying for him to take them in under his wing and care for them as part of the orphanage. However, at that time, he couldn't provide much for the orphans he had so he had to turn them away. God placed on my heart at that time to care for those hopeless children. After we purchased the necessities for the 29 children of the orphanage and the 10 widows, I asked him if he could take in those orphans that he had to turn away before. He said yes, he would go get them and bring them home to the orphanage. He went out in search of them that day, found them and brought them home. We purchased the necessities for these new children that we had purchased for the others, and they blended right in to their new family of the Lords Mercy Foundation.
The Lords Mercy Foundation now has 35 children and 15 widows. We always have several projects going on at one time. Our largest project is the purchasing of land to build a proper orphanage on. Right now, the children live in the small house with Ronald's grandmother that he rents. The cost for the land is $3,000. We have also launched our new Sponsorship Program, with currently 6 of the children having sponsors. The program is $30 a month for a child. There are also the daily needs, such as food, school fees, toothpaste, etc., that change periodically. All monies collected, less international gateway fees, will be sent to the Ministry. We have been praying diligently for God to provide for these children and he has come through in amazing ways so far.
