Wyatt the Warrior:  NICU Support Fund

Watching our niece, Allison’s pregnancy has been such a joy - her beaming face, her rounding body, her worries and expectations.

And then, at 27 weeks the unthinkable happened: Allison went into labor. She delivered a very tiny, beautiful 2 pound 10 ounce baby boy, named Wyatt.

Wyatt needs round the clock hospital care at Alta Bates Hospital in Berkeley for at least 2-3 months. His parents, Allison and Paul, have booked a hotel room close to the hospital to be with him as much as they can. However, they both have returned to work in order to take leave when he comes home.

In Allison’s own words:
“Yesterday I got to hold my son for over an hour. I got to watch him work so hard to open his eyes. I watched his eyes try and then successfully fix onto me. He locked on me even though I’m just a blur to him. 
 Then I watched him follow Paul’s voice with his eyes as Paul moved around me. It was the best moment of my life and it’s the memory keeping me sane today. I need to spend every second with my son, but I can’t. I need to hold him all day, but he can’t be held much due to his intensive care needs.  I’m sharing one of our bright spots, amidst the overflowing achy tears and the ups and downs of daily updates. I have enjoyed the positive stories shared with me about other preemie successes, but the truth is, we are not yet that story. We can only be in the moment. We can only be right where Wyatt is. Holding him was allowed yesterday, it might not be today. Wyatt is fighting for his life and all we can do is walk that path with him.”
