Gusti in the Rice Fields of Bali

Gusti is a 70 year old Balinese rice farmer who has worked in the rice fields of Ubud for over 50 years. Rice farmers help preserve the natural beauty and the delicate eco balance in the surrounding environment.
The average salary in Bali is about $150 per month and rice farmers make less than that. Gusti has been ill for the past two months and although his family took him to traditional healers, I have watched him become thinner and weaker as the treatment he is receiving has not been effective. The family does not have the money to pay for a medical doctor so I arranged for him to see one. The doctor did a CT scan and Gusti was diagnosed with an abdominal tumor and prostate problems. The doctor recommended immediate surgery and the cost is estimated to be about $9,000. The family cannot afford the surgery and the surgery is urgent.
