Why do I care and who I am?

My name is Regine and I decided to become a nurse 14 years ago when I was misdiagnosed at the age of 26. At that time I was not in healthcare and didn't know anything about medical, diagnosis or even diagnostic tests that can be done to determine illnesses, however, I did know my body. I was persistent although the medical staff didn't want to listen to me. Finally, one day because of my persistence and complaint, I was told by my doctor "To make you feel better I will order a CT-Scan of your belly". That is when my life changed forever. I was diagnosed with full blown Cardiac Heart Failure. It would have been easy for me to be angry at my doctor and the ER doctors for not taking my complaint seriously but instead, I became my own advocate. I was cared for in the ICU (Rush University-Chicago) by compassionate nurses who took the time to explain why I was having difficulty breathing. What it meant when the doctor said my ejection fraction was 12%, helping me process the prognosis of needing a possible heart transplant.  That kind of support from the ICU nurses is the reason I became a nurse. I wanted to help other people.

My goal was to listen to patients when they say something is not right. As I was recovering from heart failure I was determined and immediately enrolled at the local community college for my pre-requisites and certified nursing assistant classes. Still not able to take a deep breath and the looming thought of being on a long endless heart transplant list, I began my journey. Fast forwarding to years later my Congestive Heart Failure improved with medications and I did not need the heart transplant that I was told I would probably need. I continued to improve as years have gone by while still working towards my goal. I have succeeded.  With hard work and help from my family, I’ve received my Associates in Nursing, Bachelors and Masters in Nursing as a Nurse Practitioner. Throughout the years I have shared my story, encouraged others, listened to my patients and motivated young adults. Although I have to continue taking heart medication I am grateful for life and want to continue to give back.

The Uncertainty of healthcare we face today is a bit scary for a lot of people. My vision and goal is to open a clinic in my community in the Houston area. The clinic structure will be a low cost effective clinic that will help people afford healthcare who may not be able to do so. It will also address the needs of people who have and pay high deductibles from their insurance companies. It will give people the opportunity to receive quality healthcare from a primary care provider. As Nurse Practitioners we have always been known to be advocates of our patients. Simply listening to patients concerns can save lives because you know your body, I know this because it saved mines. Please help me raise money so I can make a healthcare difference in my community. Please help me reach my goal in opening a low-cost clinic.
