Emy Malmberg’s Cancer Journey

Donation protected
Hello; my name is Shannon Mantei.
I want to introduce you to Emerson Malmberg, daughter of Chelsea and Scott and sister to Marshall. They live here in High River and have been contributing members of the community all of their lives having been born and raised here.

In the middle of November, Emerson (14) found a hard mass in her lower abdomen. After seeing the doctors in the Emergency department at the High River Hospital she was sent immediately to the Calgary Children’s Hospital. She underwent ultrasounds and an MRI on the mass and the result was that Emerson had a mix of cystic and solid material which the doctors had to remove immediately. Her surgery resulted in having the tumor removed along with her right ovary and fallopian tube.

Since then she has been at home recovering from this invasive surgery. However, on Dec. 1st the pathology results came in from the tumor and the family received the devastating news that Emerson has a very rare and aggressive form of ovarian cancer.

The family has been spending the last week preparing their hearts and life for what is coming next.

They have an incredible Gyno/oncologist from the Calgary Children’s Hospital who has been working with Emerson’s new Gyno/oncologist assigned to her at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre and they have been fortunate to have three Specialists in this specific type of cancer reach out and work alongside their doctors in Calgary. This is incredible news!!

While the family has been asking for prayers and positive thoughts and energy sent to their family, her doctors have come up with a treatment plan for Emy which results in a long hard road ahead of them.

They will have enormous medical expenses: medical supplies, medication, travel expenses as well as unknowns at this time.

Childhood cancer is something that no family should ever experience, and in this case, I want to ask us, as a community, to rally behind this family as they navigate through something any parent can only describe as their worst nightmare.

Emerson’s family will be travelling from High River to Calgary for her treatments, all while also trying to maintain some normalcy for their son Marshall. Both Scott and Chelsea have taken leave from work at this time to be home with their daughter while she takes on this challenging battle with Cancer.

If you would like more information about this rare type of cancer, you can find information at: https://www.smallcellovarian.org/index.htmlHome [smallcellovarian.org]Small Cell Carcinoma of the Ovary (SCCOHT) is a rare, highly malignant tumor that affects mainly young women. The median age of diagnosis is 24 years old.www.smallcellovarian.org

Supporting this foundation also will directly impact the Malmberg Family as Emerson is registered with this board of doctors to participate in medical research to learn more about this rare and aggressive form of ovarian cancer that has affected less than 500 women/girls worldwide. Typically affecting females under the age of 24, this specific type is less the 0.01% of all ovarian cancers.
If you would like to drop off food our good friend Sharon has kindly set up a meal train:
