Help Nigel live with dignity

Imagine if your whole world changed in a split second and you weren't able to speak, feed yourself or hug your wife and children. That's what's happened to our dear friend Nigel after he suffered a life-changing  stroke that left him fighting for his life in intensive care. We're asking you to help us raise the £50,000 for the essential, works and specialised equipment that will allow him to live with dignity where he belongs – at home with his family. We need to meet our goal in the next four months, and we can only do it with your help.

Why we need your help

On 5 October Nigel suffered a stroke so severe he spent six weeks fighting for his life first in the Intensive Care Unit then the High Dependency Unit at Northampton General Hospital. He's now in a specialist stroke unit in Warwickshire, where he is expected to stay until March 2020.

He is currently only able to communicate using an eye gazer. He gets fed through a “peg” in his stomach, and he can't move his limbs. But with intensive treatment, he's shown some improvement: he's begun to regain some facial expressions; he can mouth some words; and he's now able to to gently squeeze your hand. He is facing all of this with his usual good humour and via his eye gazer has even been able to make his friends laugh. So thankfully despite his current health battle he is still himself and determined to make progress.

A complex/fragile situation

What makes the situation even more urgent is that his wife, Dan, has been fighting rectal cancer for the past  two years. When Nigel suffered his stroke she was recovering from invasive surgery. She relied on Nigel to help care for their two daughters who they adopted seven years ago and have spent that time dedicating themselves to building a happy family for the two girls. While Dan is currently unable to work, she's determined to beat cancer and to bring Nigel home where he belongs.

How your donations will be spent

The money raised will be spent to build an extension so that Nigel will have an accessible wet room and bedroom on the ground floor. To help towards the purchase and installation of equipment, hoists & mobility aids that will allow him to be cared for and continue is rehabilitation journey in his home and lastly to help fund additional help at home.

Why this family deserves your support

Having watched Nigel and Dan suffer the heartbreak of many rounds of failed IVF, the people close to them were so happy that these two finally got the chance to be parents, when they got to bring home their two adopted daughters. They fought hard for this family and with a little help to adapt to these big changes, these funds will enable Nigel to live at home with dignity and ensure they can continue to be a close and loving family unit with these two beautiful girls.
