Help For Bernie
On March 26th, Bernie suffered a brain aneurysm rupture and was air lifted to the hospital. He was in a coma for 3.5 weeks and had surgery to control the swelling due to the brain bleed. This surgery was to place a shunt and drain the fluid into his stomach. When he woke up it was to a blind left eye and short-term memory loss that has not improved. On May 10th, after intense rehabilitation therapy, he was released from the hospital.
Bernie was readmitted to the hospital two more times. Once was due to more seizures, then two days after his release he had severe stomach pain and swelling. His appendix was removed and was released from the hospital.
On June 18th, he was sent back to the hospital for the fourth time. In the week prior, his health & cognizance was dropping at a dramatic rate. We were informed that he had an infection in his brain from the shunt that was placed back in March. At this point the doctor reached out to his mother and advised she should fly out immediately as there was little hope he could fight the infection. The doctor projected Bernie had a 50/50 chance of survival. The doctors began experimental antibiotic injections directly into the brain, as a last resort of treatment.
Beating the odds once again, Bernie was moved out of ICU last week and will be expected to go through rehabilitation therapy again before he is released from the hospital for what his family hopes is the last time.
It has been four months since the aneurysm rupture, three of which Bernie has spent in the hospital. He has been hospitalized for 88 days and counting.
He has endured countless surgeries, eye-blindness, memory impairment, and through all, has kept his humor.
