Ghana School Project

Education is a basic right to which every child should have access, sadly, that is not the case in far too many developing countries. As a result many children grow up without the skills and tools to better themselves, or their communities. My name is Richie Sai-Appiah, I was born and raised in Ghana before immigrating to Canada as a child. As such, a part of heart will always be there.

As a young boy in the village of Fosu Krom, the nearest school was 15 kilometres away. For anyone, let alone a young child, that is a very long, and dangerous walk to take to school. Since then, the village has built a school out of bamboo posts and palm leaves to create a type of roof. School is cancelled when it rains, as the leaves do little to block the rain from the young students. With a lack of tables and chairs, many of the children must stand through their school day and share spaces to write on. The teacher stands in front of a piece of plywood as his chalkboard. It's not much, but it is the best they can do for these kids.

The average person in the village earns about three dollars a day, as a bag of cement costs twelve dollars (approx 600 bags needed to complete school project), the people of Fosu Krom and its neighbouring regions are left with little for options. These children want to learn, and they have teachers. What they don't have, is a safe, dry, solid place to learn. From birth they are at a disadvantage with such a lack of common necessary resources available to them, and without a proper place to gain an education, they always will be.

Currently, we have a group of twelve volunteers working to raise funds. We have secured a 5 acre plot of land for the school to be built upon, now, our goal is to raise $15,000.00 dollars for the building materials to erect a basic but permanent structure of learning. In addition to the school itself,  if we can surpass our goal, we feel it is important to give the children and teachers access to computers and a shuttle van to take them to and from school as transportation is limited to none.

A child's mind is the most powerful tool we have to change the world for the better, no child should be without the gift of an education.
