Wilful Murder - Short Film - True Story 1936,QLD

Wilful Murder is a 15 minute historical courtroom drama based on a true story.

After a young woman is forced to kill her stepfather in order to protect her mother, she is put on trial for wilful murder and must convince the jury of her innocence.

This is the true story of Kate who lived in Charleville, 1936. The funds raised from this GoFundMe will go towards the creation of this film to preserve the story and help emerging filmmakers from Griffith Film School hone their skills.

In early 2021, my mother and I were having a conversation about family history, and she mentioned a story about my great-grandmother. She described the shooting and the trial that followed. Immediately, I was moved by the sheer bravery and courage of my great-grandmother (Kate). My mother showed me all of the archival documents she had collected, from newspaper clippings from the Courier Mail, police reports, and much more. I knew straight away I had to share this incredible story with everyone.

I am extremely passionate and driven to tell this story as it tackles themes and topics such as domestic violence and gender inequality, which are still prevalent in today’s society. One of the many things that excite me about this project is that it has so much grit and depth to it. As a filmmaker, I have always been drawn to telling stories with tension and mystery and I believe that's exactly what this story has. Wilful Murder is also an extremely unique story to tell, as it's not every day you have access to tell a true story of this scale. As a woman, I am also extremely passionate about female voices and stories being heard. I am a feminist at heart, and the idea of exploring and capturing the struggles of women in the 1930s is a topic I feel very strongly about.
