SOPER CREEK WILDLIFE NEEDS HELP

Donation protected

Wildlife Rehabilitation has been deemed as an essential service by the government of Ontario.

The service of caring for sick, injured, abandoned and orphaned wildlife is FREE to everyone in Ontario as mandated by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry. Making it illegal to charge for the service of wildlife rehabilitation.

We do not receive any government funding for wildlife rehabilitation.

Here is why Soper Creek Wildlife Rescue Needs YOUR help:

We work to heal and release Species at Risk.

The life of each individual animal plays a critical role to the overall survival of that particular species. These species are on the verge of extinction. Working along side other organizations we help save populations of Species at Risk.

We work to balance ecosystems.

Great consideration is taken into account when choosing release locations for the thousands of animals that come into wildlife centers. Being careful not to over or under populate a given area is critical for the survival for the ecosystem. Over population depletes vital resources for its inhabitants. While under population doesn't provide food sources for apex predators or seed dispersal opportunities.

Wildlife custodians work with local municipalities.

Most municipalities do not have a wildlife department within their animal services. These municipalities rely heavily on wildlife rehabilitation centers.  They divert phone calls to the wildlife centers when residents have questions or emergencies about wildlife. Municipalities transfer all wildlife cases to rehabilitation centers. They look to wildlife centers as an expert in the field and request wildlife educational programs at municipal events. All of this is done without any financial support from the municipalities. The wildlife center accepts all of these expenses on their own.

The work of saving individual wild lives is not recognized as important as most of these animals have been deemed "pests".

The reality is that all wildlife, no matter how big or small they might be plays a vital role in the survival of the web of life. The removal of any species, plant or animal, will cause the collapse of the way humans currently exist.

We are part of your community.

Soper Creek Wildlife Rescue's family, furred, feathered, two legged, three legged and four legged, plays an active role in your community.

Our WILD family and animal ambassadors have walked in your Santa Clause parade. They marched on as you cheered and screamed their names.

Volunteering to participating in community events such as Oronofest, Family Safety Day, Santa Clause Parades  and various school programs is our way of giving back to the community.

When Soper Creek Wildlife Rescue can provide supplies, toys or advise to other charitable organizations such as Rescue Chow and the Children's Hospital we gladly donate.

Soper Creek Wildlife Rescue offered a 7 month long museum exhibit FREE for your children to experience with their class. Over 7,000 students were able to participate in this free curriculum based program.

Soper Creek Wildlife Rescue is important to for the children that participate in our educational programs. Learning about the importance of Canada's wildlife whether it be in their classroom, reconnecting with nature through our forest school or watching a wildlife detectives presentation at a local event.

You and your children know these animals by name, you share their stories at your dinner table and many of you have become Stewards of the land, advocating for wildlife.

How COVID-19 has effected us.

Soper Creek Wildlife Rescue  is Durham Region's ONLY wildlife rehabilitation center.  Our only source of funding comes from our educational programming (in-school programs, onsite forest school, summer camps,  festivals and events), our membership program and your donations.

The effects of COVID-19 have been detrimental to our wildlife center, at this time causing us to cancel all of our educational programs until July 1st (maybe longer).

Many Events and Festivals have chosen to cancel gatherings for all of 2020 even if being held in December. This results in the cancellation of our appearance. Remember these programs are our only source of funding to feed and care for the animals.

We have lost all revenue sources.

We have laid off all staff members.

We have had to release 95% of our volunteers.

The difficult decision was made to temporarily close the doors to the wildlife rehabilitation center and only care for the animals currently admitted.

WE NEED HELP TO RE-OPEN THE WILDLIFE REHABILITATION CENTER

TODAY we are asking for help, from those that can.  We know these are uncertain times for everyone. Each day we get phone calls looking to place sick, injured and orphaned animals and it is so hard to say we can’t accept these vulnerable animals at this time.

Soper Creek WIldlife Rescue has already applied for the government bank loan, along with any and all sources to allow us to open and be financially stable for the immediate future.  However, we need more financial assistance to make this a reality, and as quickly as possible as we enter into “baby” season.

Today we ask you to help support an important member of your community, Soper Creek Wildlife Rescue.

Support the animals that don't have a name.
The animals that need a second chance at life.
The animals that have lost their mother.
The animals that have had their lives forever changed because of humans.

Many of you have already stepped up an helped us during this difficult time by purchasing memberships, purchasing items from our Amazon Wish List  and making donations .

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you.
