Rescued Wild and Domestic Horses Looking For Help!

Donation protected
Hello Friends and Family - Most of you know that we run an animal rescue but we have run into an issue this year that maybe some of you could help with. It turns out that Covid-19 has not been kind to charities and ours is no exception. It turns out that the nonprofit that we previously had gotten a hay grant from this time of year has no funds to give to horse rescues, and in the past year our donations have gone from over $7,000 to $135.

Laura and I have been working hard for the horses for 25+ years, however, another issue has shown up as of late: It appears that many of the large hay brokers in our area got stimulus money that they used to buy all of the local hay supplies. Now we are being told that unless we can buy a minimum of 25 tons of hay that no hay is available. The alternative is buying from feed stores, which charged a lot more for their hay. We were paying about $9 or $10 per hundred pounds of hay, but the feed stores are charging $15 to $18 per hundred pounds of hay. YIKES!

Laura and I will continue to work hard to care for our animals. We will manage as we always have, however, doing roof repairs, building fences and doing other handy man work is getting more and more difficult as I age. Laura drives people to their medical appointments, but that work is not steady. We have a lot of mouths to feed, so if you can donate any amount, please help. If you are unable to donate, maybe you can share this request with your friends. Thank you!

For many years I remodeled foreclosed homes for banks and realtors, and also flip houses for investors. I retired from that work 6 years ago. We found a large property where the horses could be much happier and we moved here at that time. We are completely off grid and you can see where we live in the pictures. This time of year there is nothing growing, so the horses eat only baled hay in larger quantities and that has become a pricing issue.
This photo below was taken last summer when there was still some desert grass and weeds for the horses to nibble on, so although the horses are fed baled hay 365 days a year, in the spring and summer we are able to cut back a little on baled hay because there is a bit of feed growing for the horses to graze on. We also cannot irrigate to grow grass or alfalfa hay even though we have large acreage because we do not have agricultural water rights and can get in big trouble if we were to irrigate.

I know it is difficult times for many people, and we certainly understand  if people are unable to help. But we would be eternally grateful if you could help with a small donation and/or by Sharing our fundraiser.

Every little bit would help this year. Thank you for your considerations. Even sharing this appeal would be helpful and greatly appreciated. Our sanctuary is a 501(c)3 and our EIN is 45-3189625. The Starlight Hospice and Sanctuary. Any donations are tax deductible and because of COVID, you can actually deduct 100% instead of the normal 60%. We are happy to promptly send you a receipt for your donation.

When we were working for banks we got a lot of properties assigned to us where we found dogs and cats in and around the houses. Many of the animals  were half starved and sick. We got them treated and fed and most are still with us because they weren't candidates for adoption because of physical/health and/or behavioral issues they have. The food and vet care for them is much less than the feed and care for the horses.
Laura was a vet tech, she has been around dogs, and cats for over 62 years, and she has been seriously involved in the equine industry as a trainer, instructor, and behaviorist for over 50 years, so without her experience and expertise with animals we wouldn't be able to take care of so many animals. Thank you again Everyone!
