Sharing Black History in Vancouver

Donation protected
Despite what you have been told, there are Black people in Vancouver and there are black people from Vancouver.  It’s a diverse group of people united by a laughably common shared experience:

“Where are you from?”

“Burnaby.”

“No, but where are you FROM from?”

Imagine being asked this question so often that it defines your identity as an outsider.

We are raising funds to put together a highly visible exhibit that responds to this question by sharing stories and images of the black community in Vancouver, and opening space for an alternative narrative.

Two Vancouver artists, Floyd Sandiford (www.floydsinclair.ca) and Shahanah Shivji (www.shahanah.ca) will bring this installation to life through paint and photography.

The exhibit’s location in a Gastown storefront will make these stories accessible to all - 24 hours a day.

We are crowdfunding donations on a 4 week campaign ending February 5, 2016 to purchase materials to develop the installation as well as support the artists in producing the work. We will also be creating commemorative photobooks that will capture the stories of 40 members of the black community.

Let’s make black history visible in this city and come together to bring these stories to life! Join us for the installation launch at 6pm on Thursday, February 11, 2016 at Calabash 428 Carrall St.
