Whaley Big Bike Ride

This July, Will and I are going to be cycling over 1,000 miles from Lands End to John O'Groats to raise money for ORCA and collect data on any whales, dolphins and porpoises we see along the way. We will be doing the cycle unsupported, and are hoping to complete it in 14 days - a massive challenge for us!

Whales, dolphins and porpoises face a number of threats in UK waters, including noise pollution, ship strikes, fishing and marine litter. ORCA is dedicated to identifying and protecting critical habitats around the UK and Europe, in order to create safer seas and ultimately promote the health of our oceans. ORCAs marine mammal survey teams on board ferries and cruise ships collect valuable data, and provide expert knowledge to passengers on the astonishing marine wildlife on our doorstep. We love that ORCA combine accessible marine education with their conservation activities, giving ordinary people opportunities to take an active role in marine science and conservation.

We will be trying to stop in coastal locations as often as we can, and collecting data using ORCAs new OceanWatchers app. Oceanwatchers is a brand new surveying app that will allow trained citizen scientists to collect effort-based data on whales, dolphins and porposies, no matter the platform they are on (land or sea), or the people they are with. OceanWatchers will enable more people to get involved with ORCAs work, and collect valuable data more regularly - we are so excited to use it for this challenge, and in the future.
