Why do you think African Americans have survived over 400 years in America?
Eighty years ago takes us back to 1940 in the era of the Jim Crow laws – state and local statutes that legalized and enforced racial segregation in the Southern United States – existed for about 100 years. The laws were meant to marginalize African Americans by denying them the right to vote, hold jobs, get an education, and other opportunities. Those who opposed Jim Crow laws often faced arrest, fines, jail sentences, violence, and death.
We Still Stand: interviews with African Americans 80+ years features limited illustrations of the participants in the study by Shirley Jackson Whitaker, Founder of the Shirley Whitaker Foundation, Author of Ashes to Ashes, and Activist.
Each participant was asked the question: Why do you think African Americans have survived over 400 years in America?
The funds raised will be used to tell the story of American History through the lens of Lynching, the film Ashe to Ashes directed by Taylor Rees, the book Ashes to Ashes, featuring etchings by Shirley Whitaker, and other Shirley Whitaker Foundation projects.
Donations of $250 or more receive one (1) of the limited edition (300) illustrations while supplies last.
