Dear Friends,
This is Mark Bruszer, Youth Pastor with Grace Community Church in Prunedale, California.
This past year, our youth group (and many others) lost someone who was important in our lives. On September 21st, Michael Daniels, also lovingly known by the youth kids as “Brotha Mike”, went home to be with the Lord. Mike was a very special person, wonderful friend, and incredibly loved and respected. Those who knew Mike best, knew that he was passionate about helping others, especially teenagers. Brotha Mike was a leader, mentor, confidant, teacher, and advocate for the youth students. To me, he was not only my partner in youth ministry, but most of all, my closest friend. Not everyone knew Michael Daniels, but his work with students continues to impact many.
Like me, Mike was extremely passionate about our camp ministry. Each year, our church sends roughly 40 kids to West Coast Grace Youth Camp (July 15th – 22nd). For many of our campers, this is their first encounter with Christian role models. Others return year after year, reunite with friends from California & Arizona, and grow in their walk with The Lord. We not only bring kids from our church, we bring kids from our community and inner city Salinas, group homes, and foster children. The majority of the kids are from low-income families and simply can’t afford the full price of this program. However, year after year, God provides the funds through generous donations and lots of fundraising.
As we are preparing for camp and other summer youth activities, Brotha Mike is deeply missed. His excitement, enthusiasm, and gift of connecting with students was a cornerstone in our youth ministry. But you will agree that Mike’s legacy of helping young ones continues to live on! As our way to celebrate our memory of Michael and all the amazing work he did, Grace Community Church is establishing The Michael Daniels Memorial Camp Scholarship Fund. This scholarship will be designated to help families send their kids to summer camp. So far, Mike’s scholarship fund has raised enough money to fully cover 4 camper scholarships! Our goal this year, is to raise enough money to cover an additional 13 scholarships. We are also organizing fundraisers this summer to help raise the necessary monies so all students can go to camp regardless of their ability to pay. This year the cost of one week of camp is $330 per camper (this price is all inclusive and about 40%-50% lower than most other 6-day camp programs).
The purpose for this letter is to ask you for prayer support for our youth kids, the camp ministry, and to celebrate Brotha Mike’s work with our youth. We also obviously want to strengthen Mike’s scholarship through donations. Michael strongly believed that camp ministry was one of the most effective ways to lead a young person to Christ, I still do.
I can’t speak for other ministries, but for me, West Coast Grace Youth Camp has impacted more students each year than any other ministry I have been a part of. Compared to other camp programs, ours is smaller, old school and far less expensive. Yet, campers who’ve attended in the past would agree that it was the most fun & memorable week of their entire summer. Between the hardworking volunteer staff, loving counselors, gifted Bible speakers and the beautiful setting of Palomar Mountain, our program impacts students in an indescribable way.
Brotha Mike did his best to help find as many unsaved kids and bring them to camp each summer, we don’t plan to stop!
