The Wes Miller Help a Friend Project has been organized by friends of Wes Miller, with the hope that the help of many can make a profound difference in one man's life.
Our friend Wes, has been in declining health for two years. His current condition has left him without the ability to move throughout his home or even leave his house. Currently Wes is confined to a broken recliner in his living room. This means that providing care is at best very difficult. Wes's Wife Peggy is his sole care giver, providing medical care, nutrition and hygiene.
Project funding needs are urgent. Each day that goes by means the inability to access medical treatment as well as continued suffering.
Wes Miller is a soft spoken man. He has an understated personality that has the ability to bring out the best in everyone. Born in rural Missouri, Wes was brought up with traditional values of friends and family. He was educated at the University of Missouri and ultimately became the AG teacher for Fulton High School. During his nearly twenty two years there, Wes has had a profound effect on the community he served. Through his duties as an AG teacher, Future Farmers of America Sponsor, Nation Honor Society Sponsor, and county fair board member, he has touched, in a positive way, the lives of so many. While developing this project I was given the privileged of reviewing many of Wes's keepsakes. Among them were his retirement scrapbook and numerous letters from students, coworkers and friends. I found myself humbled by the kind words offered by those who's life he had touched in such a positive way.
Being a humble man, when Wes became ill, he never asked for help. It was only after a medical emergency occurred that Wes's condition was disclosed. Even then, friends had to urge Wes to let them help him. To this day Wes continues to say “ I do not want to be a burden on anyone or to let them down”. This speaks volumes about his character.
Wes has always been a stout man. His current medical condition has increased his body's size to a point where Bariatric Medical equipment is required for proper care and movement. The single width entry door, and the structurally unsound entry deck, do not allow for equipment access to the residence. Without modification to the residence, and the addition of the bariatric medical equipment, Wes remains confined to his recliner. He is unable to seek medical treatment. His doctor currently makes house calls to provide for his care. If an emergency would occur, such as a fire or a medical emergency, which would require immediate departure from the residence, Wes and Peggy would be solely dependent on emergency personnel to enlarge the access to the residence and provide extrication. The process would require numerous emergency personnel and specialized equipment.
So what does this project hope to accomplish? The plan is multifaceted. First to provide adequate access to the residence. This will include installation of double wide entry doors, a new deck and ramp system capable of supporting the weight of the equipment and persons required to safely move Wes in and out of the house.
Repairs to the living room and kitchen sub floors will be required to support the weight of the new equipment. A new smooth surface flooring will be installed. This will allow for easy movement of the bairatric equipment as well as increase the ability of providing a more sterile environment.
Structural foundation work is required prior to any other residential modifications. The basement wall directly under the residents entry door is unsound and must be corrected so the weight of all the new equipment is adequately supported.
Once all modifications to the residence have been completed a bariatric bed, bariatric lift, bariatric toilet, and bariatric seating will be provided. This equipment is needed to provide a much needed level of comfort and safety. Wes's condition requires specific body positioning for comfort and breathing. The bariatric bed will provide this. It will also allow for improved treatment and care. The bariatric lift is required to allow Wes to be moved from the bed and onto a toilet, chair, or wheelchair. This something Wes simply cannot do at this time.
After the equipment arrives, Wes will be assisted by local EMT's, paramedics, first responders, as well as other volunteers. The goal is to improve Wes's overall health through nutrition, exercise, and wound care. All support will be provided with the cooperation of the treating doctor.
So what do we need now? Funding, foundation repair specialists, contractors/carpenters, flooring specialists, vendors willing to donate the needed supplies, volunteers willing to help with needed tasks.
The goal is to return Wes to good health and allow him to once again enjoy his family, his friends, his farm, and his life.
