To know Mom is to love her.
Her home of 30 years has been devastated by the flooding in Houston. We know that it was a calculated and difficult decision for the city to open the reservoirs, preventing even more extensive damage to our beloved Houston. As a result, Mom's home was sacrificed.
We were able to boat there to try to salvage some of her belongings, but it isn't safe yet. The water has been steadily rising all week with hopes that it will peak today (Friday, Sept 1). It is expected that water will continue to flow through her home for a few more days (and praying not weeks).
She will need an apartment for as long as it takes to rebuild her home with new belongings, furniture, appliances, household goods, as all have been destroyed. She will also need a new car. We expect this will take one year.
We aren't devastated by those replaceable items, but instead the love notes from her grandchildren, the pictures that tell the story of her life, the treasures from her travels and adventures, the book her dad wrote and inscribed, and of course the list goes on. We grieve those losses.
This will likely not be enough to cover all of her expenses, this is a great and much needed start.
We are surrounded by the most wonderful network of hands-on-the-ground friends who we are so lucky to call family. Thank you so much for all of the calls and voices of care. We love you.
