Mira Kathryn Capper was born on December 20, 2014, about 9 weeks early. Ananda went into premature labor in early December and was on hospital bed rest until sweet Mira was born. We expect Mira to be in NICU until the end of January. Ananda and Mira have both been getting a lot of love and excellent medical care.
The family has great medical insurance though they expect to pay their full out of pocket for 2014 and 2015. In addition, both Ananda and Jeremy have taken far more time off work than either of them anticipated. Any financial help you can give would be greatly appreciated.
At this point Mira is too little and fragile for visitors. Ananda and Jeremy can't hang out either as we are all too germy to risk it. They respond to emails when they have the time though, and they would love to hear from you.
Here is the latest update from January 3:
Mira is two weeks old today! Hard to believe it has been two weeks already and at the same time it has been the longest/hardest two weeks of my life. But just look at her! She is beautiful!
So, we are still in the NICU and there are tears and challenges everyday, but in the big picture things are going really well. We have entered what they like to call "the plant stage", where she doesn't really have any medical problems (other than being so young) and you just need to feed them and watch them learn and grow.
Mira is growing, today we made it back up to her original birth weight, YAY (it is normal for babies to loose quite a bit of weight before they start growing again). She as started eating directly from mommy, which is a big deal for preemies! Learning to suck, swallow and breath at the same time is actually a bit complex for a preemie brain. She still needs her feeding tube because she only has enough energy to eat a percentage of her food by mouth at this age (again, totally normal for her age), but her Dr is very impressed with her eating progress for how young she is. Some time this week we should be able to start feeding her by bottle also, which means daddy can start feeding her too!
Dr says we are shooting for a discharge date to be somewhere around Jan. 25th. She just needs to be able to eat 100% of her food by mouth and be able to regulate her own body temperature. Regulating her body temp should just happen on it's own as she starts to get bigger, which means that really eating and getting fat is the number one goal. Plant stage, we just give her what she needs and watch her grow.
So far she has been a superstar! Jeremy and I are just so enamored with her!
