Water and Education Care International was formed in 2017 in order to support promising students and to improve life in a rural community in Kenya. As a retired teacher who frequently traveled to the area, I became personally engaged in the lives of the people I met. Among the students we have supported, there is now a doctor, nurse, pharmacist, accountant, and lawyer. Another 10 students are now pursuing their dreams in area secondary schools.
Two years ago we were able to excavate a reservoir to catch runoff during the rainy season. This project provided flood control and stored water for use during the dry months. Local families who do not have access to clean drinking water began using the reservoir as a resource for their animals and domestic use. Outbreaks of cholera and typhoid occurred frequently in these families and have caused deaths. The photo shows a shallow hand-dug well. The water from these wells is not dependable and is not safe to drink. Women and children spend hours each day walking long distances to fill containers with clean drinking water at the only drilled well in the area.
WE Care International is now committed to drilling a community well that will provide a sustainable source of safe drinking water to hundreds of families. The hydrology reports have been completed and drilling is slated to begin in April. Funds have been raised to cover the cost of drilling the well. Current fundraising will cover the cost of the pump and storage tank. All donations are greatly appreciated and frequent progress reports will be posted.
Thank you. Asante sana.
