We're All In - Fighting With Geno

Donation protected
We have received numerous inquiries from Geno’s family and friends about how they could help and if there was a Go Fund Me page for Geno set up.  His family said just your prayers are more than enough but we decided to create this page for those who wish to do more.

Geno Schinderle was diagnosed with T-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia on Thurs., November 19, 2020.  He is the 15 year old son of Butch and Stacy Schinderle.  They reside in Iron Mountain, MI and he is a freshman in High School.  Geno is an avid skier and was scheduled to leave for Park City, UT on November 30 to train with the Park City Freestyle Team.  He spent a couple weeks in Park City over the summer and was so excited for this amazing opportunity.  He was going to stay with his Uncle Dar and Aunt Leslie Hendrickson but unfortunately, his plans came to a screeching halt and are now on hold until next year.  He worked so hard to get ready and is super bummed about missing this year of training.  We couldn’t be more heart broken for him.

Geno had been sick for a week or so prior to his diagnosis but was told he has COVID despite the negative tests.  Finally on the morning of November 19 he was rushed to St. Vincent Hospital via ambulance to determine exactly what was causing him to be so ill.  On top of the leukemia diagnosis, he was also diagnosed with strep throat and a severe strep infection in his blood which was causing the high temps.

They began him on antibiotics right away and he began chemo treatments the following day.  His infection cleared and he was feeling better but on Thanksgiving night he fell very ill again.  He was moved to ICU and needed medication to bring his blood pressure up as it was dangerously low.  It was determined that he developed another infection in his blood and was again placed on more antibiotics.

Unfortunately, due to the infections, Geno will need to stay at St. Vincent Hospital for at least a month so they can monitor him closely during his induction phase of treatment.  His parents are fortunate that they are both allowed to stay with him during this time.  His mom has taken a leave of absence from work and his dad is arranging to take family leave without pay in order to be by Geno’s side.

Once discharged, Geno will need to continue traveling to Green Bay for chemo treatments for the next 8 and a half months.  He will continue maintenance visits for 2 and a half years.

Geno has a 17 year old brother, Dominic who is a senior in high school and a 20 year old sister, Sophia who is a junior in college and resides in Chicago.

Geno will begin physical therapy to regain his strength so he can be ready to hit the slopes next year!  He has a positive attitude and said he knows he will beat this.  It is just a speed bump in his plans to pursue his dream of becoming a freestyle skier.

Thank you for your generosity,
