We won't let cancer take our dad!

González Cantini Family,

On behalf of Alfredo González Rollán

First of all, please receive our most sincere greetings and blessings; we appreciate any attention you may give this matter.

Surely, throughout your life you must have encountered the type of people that make you stop and think: “This is a truly good human being.” Well, our family does every day when we think of our father. Our dad’s name is Alfredo González Rollán. Last month, he was diagnosed with cancer for the second time in his life; he has a stage 3 cancerous tumor (adenocarcinoma) in his esophagus and will undergo chemotherapy and radiotherapy, (and maybe surgery further on).

The treatment is going to be expensive, many things will not be covered by medical insurance. The health insurance only covers 65% of the costs of treatments and does not cover some of the prescriptions. This is the reason why our family needs your help. We are also requesting your prayers in this ordeal. The life of our father has no price and we will do everything within our power to provide him with a chance to fight the cancer. Any help will be a blessing, no matter how small.

I know it is a normal thing for everyone to believe that their dad is the best dad in the world. And many times, all of the time, my siblings and I have believed that very same thing. He is the most kind, compassionate, and generous man we know. My parents raised us to be the kind of people that try to make a difference in the world. He has always been there for us when we have needed him and now he needs us.

My dad is a special kind of awesome. Growing up, our opinions were always welcomed and listened to, which made me and my siblings grow up in an environment which encouraged us to become “citizens of the world,” aware of other people’s needs and ordeals.

The first time he got diagnosed with cancer, he was making jokes to make sure we were laughing; although he has never said it, I know he enjoys being able to make us laugh.

My siblings and I would not be the people we are without him. He taught us to care about our community, to volunteer, to help out without expecting anything in return, but most importantly to treat everyone with respect and joy.

Our dad has worked very hard, every day of his life. He is not an ambitious man, he does not care much for material things; he cares about people, about memories and joy. He has given us plenty of those. Following in his example, for my siblings and I, our life goals revolve around building a better world. The way we were raised, our parents always enforced empathy as the most important value to pursue in the way we treat others.

Now we find ourselves in need of trusting the sense of community we were instilled by him, in order to raise the funds to help provide him treatment for his cancer. Our dad is already a cancer survivor. Four years ago he beat cancer the first time, and now we are hoping he will be able to do it again.

Knowing that someone whom you love with all your heart is fighting cancer is about the most overwhelming of feelings you can experience in life. Sometimes it feels like a nightmare and we hold on to hope as tightly as we can. It is scary, but  we are ready to support him in all the ways necessary. Our family has a strong bond that exists because our dad was there for every birthday, graduation, honor roll, every celebration, every flat tire, every illness, every time we needed him; he is our personal superhero and we believe in him.
