“We Will Not Be Shamed” Survivor Video & Mini-Doc

According to an article by the American Psychological Association, 1/3 - 2/3 of all sexual assault survivors will endure a “second assault” in the form of negative reactions, disbelief, or victim blaming. See examples such as this one here (the Brock Turner assault). Or take cases, such as Dr. Ford’s, who came forth to speak out about an assault and has been publicly denounced.
Approximately 70% of rape or sexual assault victims experience moderate to severe distress, a larger percentage than for any other violent crime. Sexual violence also has detrimental affects on victims’ relationships with their family, friends, and co-workers.
“We Will Not Be Shamed” (by artist Stefany Mayz) is a song written to empower those who’s stories of survival were rejected because they, the victim, had some form of blame thrown on them by an outsider. This should never be the case. And while we cannot necessarily change the opinions of those who “throw the blame”, we CAN give survivors encouragement and support. We can also raise awareness on this topic so that we can have real discussions on the detrimental affect this blame-game has on survivors.
The “We Will Not Be Shamed” music video and 5-minute mini-documentary will be highlighting the healing process for survivors of both men and women alike. With your contribution, we will be able to create a music video that will empower and encourage people to share their story without fear of shame and that, on the other side of this darkness, there is hope to be free again.
The mini-doc will go further in depth with these survivors and their stories as artist Stefany Mayz sits down and talks with them one-on-one on what it was like getting back to “normal” again after their trauma.
