We Rally Together for John

On September 3rd, John Houdeshell, a contract firefighter on the Terwilliger Fire near the McKenzie River, was struck by a van as he walked on the shoulder of the McKenzie Highway, near Rainbow. He was on his way to his motel from having had dinner at a restaurant across the highway.
The vehicle that struck John did not stop and is still being sought by law-enforcement. Local people quickly came to John’s assistance and he was transported to the intensive care unit of the hospital 50 miles away. John suffered multiple injuries and will be undergoing several additional surgeries over the coming weeks. He remains in the ICU. John's son Ryan, whose home is in Central California, is staying close to his father during his time in the hospital.
The residents and visitors to the Upper McKenzie River Valley express their appreciation to John and other firefighters for their part in keeping our community safe from the fire. One small way of showing our appreciation is to assist with the mounting, and of course unexpected costs.
In just the last, very trying, week, John and Ryan have incurred legal and living expenses. And, it is unclear what medical and rehabilitation costs will be covered by insurance.
Ryan wants to let us know his father appreciates the support of the community. He describes his father as a 71 year-old who was fit enough to work on the fire lines with people fifty years his junior. John’s physical fitness is helping him heal, but there is still a long road ahead. We support his dedication and courage, and thank all firefighters. Won’t you join us?
