Lisha's Race Against Time

Don protégé
Fear is the thief of joy and light.

In a time when we should be overcome by gratitude for the gift of life given by an unselfish family in Florida we are wrestling with fear.  Joy is absent and her smile is dim.  Can you help us bring her infectious smile back and ease the fear?

It’s been a long fought battle and she has met every challenge with bold strength and unshakable character.  In July of this year, we learned that Lisha was a candidate for a liver transplant; the catch was we had to be able to get to the hospital within 6 hours of the “we have a liver for you” phone call.  That would have been easy if it was St. Johns but our team of doctors is at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore Maryland.

The questions started flooding in:  “How far is Tulsa from Baltimore?”

“How will we ensure we get there in time?”

“Are we going to let 1,000 miles come between a second chance at life?’

The only question we knew the answer to was  the last one, and the answer was a simple, NO.  It was time to pool our resources and temporarily move to Baltimore.  Lives have been changed, jobs have been set aside, and distance has separated us but it was never a question of is it was worth it.  We knew it would be tough but she is tougher.

We are counting on that strength now more than ever.  Sunday September 9th was game time for the highly skilled surgical team.  They worked tirelessly for over 10 hours removing the liver that had given up and implanting her new gift of a strong healthy liver ready to go to work healing her body.  After the transplant and four surgeries later, although she is incredibly strong her body is tired and has weak spots.  She is currently resting and gaining strength.

This was a high risk procedure and due to the battles she has endured over the years it’s made it more of a challenge to fit all the puzzle pieces of the body back together.  We have learned over the last couple of days that her stay in Baltimore will be twice as long as we originally anticipated.  The medical team wants to keep her close in order to ensure things grow and progress smoothly.  We have come this far we can’t turn back now, but this is where we need your help.

The expenses have become mountains and we want her to be able to focus on fighting and getting stronger not figuring out how can we continue this medical treatment, or how are we going to be able to stay in Baltimore, or when she will be able to see her children since the flight cost and hotel costs add up fast.  If we can’t gather support for Lisha we fear interfering with the treatment plan due to financial constraints.  We fear not making good on our promise to the donor family to live a purposeful life full of gratitude, and how would we tell Lisha we can’t her to the finish line.  Can you help us continue her treatment and get her across the finish line?  Every donation we receive will go to her treatment plan, Baltimore living expenses and the cost to get to and from the hospital for Tom and if we are lucky enough for the rest of her family to visit.

Thank you for all your love and support, she is fighting hard to share that infectious smile and sassy personality with all of us again.
