Hello, everyone!
For those of you who don't know, our friend Chris Slaughter just did the most punk rock thing he's ever done. He survived a major heart attack. Seriously, dudes. He had a 100% blockage to his LAD (left anterior descending artery)―a.k.a. "the widowmaker." Shortly after arriving at the emergency room he received a stent. One week later he is home from the hospital sporting a pretty cool "manzier" or "bro." It's a defibrillator you wear on the outside. You'll be glad to know Johnny Puke is now writing a song called "Shock Bra." Can't wait to hear it! In 3 months they will know whether or not he will need surgery to implant a permanent defib/pacemaker.
Chris is now on at least a dozen types of medications totalling $250 per month, and the medical bills have yet to pour in. The average cost for a 2-day stay in the hospital for patients suffering a heart attack (based on averages from a larger city in Tennessee) is more than $6,000. He was in the hospital for 7 days, with 4 of those days spent in ICU.
Thankfully, Chris does have medical insurance but his extended stay in the hospital will cost much more than average. This in itself is stressful, and stress is something doctors tell Chris he has to cut from his life (along with salt and a few other things). However, the cost of medical care can break a family and it's something no one should ever have to endure.
His super-awesome wife Adriel is taking on a lot in the way of caregiving for the whole family, cutting out teaching some yoga classes so she can stay home with Chris while he is healing, and basically being the strong woman she already is. I hope you will all pitch in and help lessen the weight they are all carrying.
Precious little Harper, their bright and amazing daughter, is taking all this in and seems to be coping, but she isn't fully aware of everything that's happening. She is just glad her Dad is home from the hospital.
