Warriors for Matthias (Matthias Pfister)

On Saturday evening February 22, 2020, the lives of Matthias Pfister, a 13 year old 7th grader at Danville Community Middle School, and his family all changed in a moment. Matthias and his dad, Kyle, were part of a violent car accident while returning to their home in Danville, IN. While both were injured, it was Matthias who suffered the worst of the accident. As first responders arrived at the scene, they immediately began to work on freeing Matthias from the vehicle. With the severe level of injuries suffered to his head and body, he was transported to Riley Children's Hospital for immediate care and was placed in critical condition. The doctors performed surgery on his skull to relieve pressure on the brain and the procedure proved successful, ultimately helping to stabilize Matthias' condition.
The good news is that Matthias is now stable and the doctors continue to be optimistic for him. However, at this point, each day is new and serves a different challenge to Matthias, the family and doctors as they take steps in determining and learning what the future holds. While we continued to hope and pray for the best, undoubtedly he will have a long road to recovery, anticipated to be at least 3 months at Riley. As one can imagine, it won't be easy for him or his family. As a parent, it's hard to imagine being in this situation. As a friend, you never want those you care about to hurt or suffer. As a community member, seeing one of your own in hardship pulls on our heartstrings. There will be lots of physical, mental, emotional and financial strain during this process. This we know.
The other good news is that Matthias is one tough kid who is loved and surrounded by a great family with his father Kyle and his mother Lauren as well as his two little siblings, Kaylynn and Jenson, who look up to their big brother. Kyle and Lauren are both administrators and educators within the school systems of Ben Davis and Chapel Hill. The family is fortunate to have a loving family, a tremendous group of friends and an even stronger community that are in this fight with them. The reality though is that as much love, thoughts and prayers that are provided everyday for them, the medical costs and other everyday expenses of being at the hospital, meals, travel, parking, etc. are still there. That's where we come in.
As a friend to the family, a coach to Matthias and a member of the Danville "Warrior" community, I write this message not only to ask for continued thoughts and prayers for Matthias and the Pfister's but to encourage your graciousness in helping to offset the financial burdens that this tragic accident has placed on the family. The more financial burden that we can collectively relieve, the more the family can focus on the most important aspect, which is being there for Matthias and helping he and the family heal together. Our community has a history of coming together, becoming a collective "Warrior" of one to help our own in times of need and hardship. I anticipate nothing less now and our goal is to extend this beyond just our own community to help Matthias and his family.
To many, Matthias is known as a tough, athletic, fun and popular 13 year old kid loving all sports (especially baseball), the Cubs, video games and normal "13 year old boy" stuff. What some don't know though is that after suffering an arm injury this school year that prevented Matthias from being able to participate in any practices or games with the Danville Middle School 7th grade basketball team, he still attended every practice and game to support his teammates, friends and school. Prior to this terrible accident, he was just recently cleared to be able to play baseball and was full of excitement to play his 13U season with the Indiana Bats travel baseball team alongside his longtime friends and teammates, and also with his dad Kyle being one of the coaches.
With his recent injuries, Matthias will surely have bigger challenges than just sports in the near term. But with God's grace, the love, support and generosity from everyone who either knows Matthias and his family and/or who is getting to know them through this message, we all can help them through this challenge together. Your generosity, regardless of the level, is so tremendously appreciated.
