Support for Wally vet care

Donation protected
Wally is an extremely important part of our family and we have been putting everything we can into supporting his care.

Wally passed away at 3am on Sunday the 3rd of October 2021.

Over the past 3 weeks we spent $30,000 on his vet care. Thanks to all of your generous donations, his last full week in hospital was covered ❤️ Thank you so much for all of your generosity.

Background:
  • 6/9: We took Wally to the emergency vet due to strange breathing. Within 20 minutes of arriving he went into cardiac arrest. The amazing staff managed to bring him back using CPR and he stabilised over the next few days. He had a spontaneous pneumothorax (air leaking from the lung into the chest cavity). They monitored him over the next week to see if the leak would heal by itself but it did not.
  • 13/9: Completed an exploratory chest surgery to try to find the leak in the lung and fix or remove the section of lung. They found a section of lung which had a small blister or bullea which burst causing a hole in the lung allowing air to leak into his chest cavity. Surgery went well, he's recovered well overnight. He was producing a lot of fluid but this was hopefully going to reduce over time.
  • 16/9: Wally came home. Still leaking over 300ml of fluid, 500ml sometimes. Took him back to the vet on the 17th and 18th and was told he was fine and rebandaged.
  • 20/9: Unhappy with the fluid amount we took him back to the vet to be examined by the surgeon. They determined that he would need additional surgery to discover the cause. It was found to be an infection in the chest cavity.
  • 23/9: Wally is still in hospital. It's been nearly 3 weeks since he was first admitted to hospital. He's recovering well with additional antibiotics but it could be another week in hospital before he's ready to come home.
  • 27/9: his fever has stayed down and they removed the chest tube today because the liquid production has really reduced. All great signs he might be able to come home soon!
  • 28/9: Wally was discharged and is looking great. It’s been a long 3 weeks but I’m so glad to enjoy his company ❤️
  • 02/10: Wally was readmitted to hospital with his breathing still not seeming quite right. They did a ct scan and could see liquid in his chest again. But when they tried to place a chest drain it was all blood. He cardiac arrested and they were unable to resuscitate him. He passed -at 3am on Sunday 03 October 2021.
