Reach for the Stars! The Michael Anderson Mural

Want to reach for the stars and help launch our next project into the universe? Help support Outside Art's latest mural project. We're thrilled to announce that Brendon Palmer-Angell (who painted the Jean Arthur mural last fall) is back to paint another one for Plattsburgh! Outside Art has teamed up with Clinton County Historical Association, the Old Base Museum Campus, and the Plattsburgh Air Force Base Museum to bring you Reach for the Stars! The Michael Anderson Mural project on the side of the Westelcom building on Durkee Street in downtown Plattsburgh.

Michael Phillip Anderson, a United States Air Force officer and NASA astronaut, was born at the Plattsburgh Air Force base (PAFB) hospital while his father serviced jets. From September 1992 to February 1995, Anderson was assigned as an instructor pilot and tactics officer in the 380th Air Refueling Wing at PAFB. In 1994, he was one of 19 candidates selected from a pool of 2,962 applicants by NASA for astronaut training. In 2003, Anderson and his six fellow crew members were killed in the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster when the craft disintegrated during its re-entry into the Earth's atmosphere. He had served as the payload commander and lieutenant colonel in charge of science experiments on the Columbia shuttle. Anderson was posthumously awarded the Congressional Space Medal of Honor. Outside Art works with local, regional, and national artists to animate public space with the goal of building community and making Plattsburgh a destination for art and a place for artists to settle and create. Founded by artist activists Julia Devine and Amy Guglielmo in January 2016, Outside Art has produced 11 murals in under five years for downtown Plattsburgh. They have blazed a trail for public art acceptance in the region.

CCHA, the Old Base Museum Campus committee and the Plattsburgh Air Force Base Museum are very pleased to partner with Outside Art to bring this long overdue honor to an American Hero.
