Voyage of Discovery

Ahoy! My name is William Acken, and I’ve been exploring answers to environmental issues since before I could sail. I have a passion for sustainability and history, both of which continually broaden my horizons and push me out of my comfort zone. I want to explore the past in an attempt to connect globally and find artistic inspiration to sing, write, and forge a brighter future for humanity by fixing its mistakes. That’s why I’ve decided to apply for a post with Sail Training International, an organization focused on developing and educating young people through the sail training experience. Through them, I will become an integral member of a small group focused on the matters that concern our planet most.

 

I am seeking sponsorship to join the crew of the Morgenster, a traditionally rigged Dutch square sail brig, for the 2022 Tall Ship Races. Traveling over the course of 10 days from Harlingen, Netherlands, to Antwerp, Belgium, I will be engaging in a small learning community where slow travel sustainability is foremost, and real-life teamwork and collaboration give way to digital connectivity.

 

Your support would mean the world to me because while studying abroad is an unforgettable experience, there are also many expenses associated with the trip. I need to raise approximately $4,800 to afford food, housing, tuition, and airfare. I'll be earning some money at the markets this year, be any additional support is so greatly appreciated!
