JOIN ME IN RAISING FUNDS TO HELP A SCOLIOSIS PATIENT IN ETHIOPIA RECEIVE LIFE CHANGING SPINAL FUSION SURGERY.
Hello everyone! My name is Armaan Raj Chawla and I am a senior at Singapore American School.
In 2015, I was diagnosed with Scoliosis. In the summer of 2016, I went through a 10 hour surgery to correct my 82 degree lumbar curve and 72 degree thoracic curve.
Now, one year on from my surgery, I am feeling better than ever and able to do most things despite having 2 rods and 23 screws holding together my spine. This is all thanks to the fantastic medical care I was fortunate enough to access at National University Hospital in Singapore.
Cognizant of the fact that my privileged experience with five star medical care is not universal, I have decided that I want to give back to those who have the same problem as me but yet cannot afford to pay for surgery.
The Scoliosis Project is an initiative that focuses on raising awareness for spinal deformities and looks to provide access to spinal fusion surgery for those that cannot afford it in the most challenged country with this condition.
Recently, I visited Ethiopia and shadowed Dr. Rick Hodes (the only spine physician in a country of 100 million people!). My experience sitting in with him in his office was surreal, each patient he got had their own complex spinal issue: kypho-scoliosis, Nuerofibromatosis, paralysis... you name it, Dr. Hodes, has seen it.
From my experience in Ethiopia it was apparent that a spinal issue was as ordinary as the common cold! Despite this fact, people just don't have enough money to correct their spinal deformities and would rather spend on neccessities rather than medical care.
The Scoliosis Project was born out of this very experience. I am a real life testament to what a successful spinal surgery can do and I want to provide the same opportunity I had, to those who can’t afford it. Trust me, spinal fusion surgery is a life changing event and for the better despite the risks associated with it. I know what it is like to have a debilitating spine deformity and the physical and psychological effects are gruelling. My aim is very simply, raise as much as I can to help my Ethiopian friends achieve normalcy.
