My name is Sayed, I’m an international student in Canada. In October 2019, I was diagnosed with a mental illness (Major Depressive Disorder). I was admitted to the hospital for 23 days due to this illness, which came to a total of $61,974. My insurance covered only $50,000, which means I won’t have any further benefits from my insurance in my lifetime regarding mental health issues. I owe $11,974 out of pocket, which I am unable to pay. This does not include ongoing medications and outpatient visits that I am required to do in order to stay out of the hospital.
I’m a full-time college student, and due to this, I am unable to work to generate income towards my debt at this time. If I do not continue with my studies, I will have to go home as I am on Student Visa. I came to Canada to study, as the program I am taking is not offered at home. I have intentions to stay in Canada and to become a permanent resident one day. I would also like to further my education here in Canada once I have obtained my diploma in Health Information Management. I have missed almost an entire term because of my illness, and I am working hard to catch up and continue my studies. This has been very difficult because I am still dealing with MDD every day, and the stress of the bill I cannot pay is making my mental state worse.
If it was possible for me to work at this time in order to make money to pay this bill, I would - however, due to the intensity of the program I am taking, I am unable to work and need to pay this bill on my own. I do not have assistance from anybody at home at this time regarding paying my bills. Upon graduation, I plan on obtaining a full-time job as soon as possible in order to start paying this bill.
Given these circumstances, I am asking for help to pay down my hospital bills in order to continue my studies here in Canada and eventually gain residency. I truly love Canada and would be heartbroken to be sent home due to an unexpected illness in which I was not prepared to deal with. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
