Vivian's Breast Cancer Village

Ms. Vivian was in the shower on February 23rd when she felt a lump in her left breast. Overwhelmed, she decided she had to have it checked out, and even though she doesn't have health insurance, she knew she had to spend this money to find out what this lump meant for her future. On February 28th, Ms. Vivian had a mammogram, and a couple days later, she had a biopsy and received the devastating breast cancer diagnosis.

The breast cancer diagnosis was daunting, of course, and her thoughts immediately went to her two college-aged children... kids who are putting themselves through school while working so that they can break the cycle of poverty in their family. But her second thought was that she needs to live. That she has life left to live and that God isn't finished with her yet.

I know this woman was put on this Earth to carry out a mission, and I believe that God isn't even close to being finished with her yet.

Vivian's diagnosis, Stage 1 Ductal Carcinoma, is treatable and curable. We've met with some amazing doctors at Methodist Hospital, and they have put together a multidisciplinary team to determine the treatment plan, For now, we think the plan involves surgery followed by chemo or radiation. The surgeons feel incredibly hopeful, going so far as to say, "Ms. Vivian... GET READY TO LIVE!"

We've applied for a program to provide emergency breast cancer assistance and are hopeful that Vivian will be accepted. If she is, we think the $10,000 will be sufficient to cover her out of pocket expenses. (If that changes, we'll let you know.)

For now, what I can tell you is that this woman is a fighter. Even in the midst of her own cancer diagnosis, she's going to work every day, loving on her snack bar guests, and caring for people in her apartment community. She's a compassionate, kind, selfless woman who puts others first, even when she's at her lowest point.

If we could all live like Vivian, our lives would be better off. Thanks for caring enough to learn about her story. Prayers are powerful, and we welcome them all day long. xoxo
