Viorica's Resettlement Fund

Donation protected

In 2014, I started my Peace Corps service in the Republic of Moldova. Little did I know I my host family would come to mean so much to me. When I first arrived in Viorica's house we didn't speak a common language yet I still felt like family. Throughout my two years of living with Viorica(34), Misa(36), Diana(17), and Gabriella(8) I had some of the greatest moments in my life such as playing cards every night as a family, working in the fields together, routinely staying up until 2 in the morning laughing together and having deep conversations, and so much more. Although many moments were filled with happiness we also experienced many moments of pain. Two months into my stay with the Tatarov family Misa gave Diana a black eye. Time passed and every now and then Diana had bruises, chipped teeth, and verbal abuse. Viorica faced years of abuse by her husband. She was constantly bruised for a year straight when they were first married. Viorica faced many forms of horrific abuse. While I lived with her she had bruises and more. Last week Misa beat Viorica so badly that she had to go to the hospital to get stitches on her face and treatment for bruised ribs. Many in the village consider it normal, justified, and usually the victim's fault. Viorica has decided to try to leave him. She has only a few funds, not many job prospects, no way of providing for her, Gabriella, or Diana. Moldovan women often do not have the economic means to leave domestic violence (which is prevalent throughout rural Moldova). Viorica is in need of funds to secure a safe place for her and her children to live, funds to secure proper documents, and to find work. Viorica is a smart, hardworking, funny, caring, and humble person. She and her family deserve a life free of domestic violence.
