Vince Askey Medical Fund

Hi all - my brother, Vince Askey, is going in for thyroid cancer surgery on January 6th.  The prognosis is fairly good, but he could have a long recovery period, and probably won't be able to work very much, if at all.  He is self-employed, so I've started this fund drive to raise money to help him with his living and other expenses while he recovers.

Here is an email from him explaining what's happened.  He's been hesitant to tell many people yet because he doesn't want people to worry, but since the surgery is in a few days, I want to start helping now if I can:

"On October 19 I went in for a routine physical exam. I was hoping the doctors might be able to help me with my arthritic knees, hips, and achy joints in general.

One test led to another, and on November 23 I was told that I probably had cancer - not related to the achy joints I was concerned about.

After a couple biopsies, I was notified on December 7 that I had Thyroid Cancer. It is a rare form of cancer that is usually found in people that are exposed to massive doses of radiation, like from Hiroshima or Chernobyl. It is even more rare in men than in women.

I am having surgery on January 6 to remove my thyroid and some lymph nodes. I will be in the hospital for three nights and then a lengthy home recovery. If all goes well, I could be back to normal in February, but it could also be much longer depending on how much the surgeon needs to remove and how close he needs to get to nerves, etc - he won't know until the surgery itself.

If the surgeon is able to remove all the cancer, there is a good chance I will be cured. Thyroid cancer in general has a high rate of survival.

The unfortunate diagnosis and path to recovery is coupled with the need for help with expenses. I don't know if I will ever be able to repay anyone, but I sincerely appreciate all the help I can get."

Anyone who knows Vince knows how selfless and kind he is.  Any amount you can donate will be much appreciated by our family.

I will be setting up a Caring Bridge site as well to keep everyone updated on his surgery and progress so that he doesn't have to worry about individual phone calls and emails while he's recovering.

Thank you,
