Village Health Workers, rural Haiti

Donazione protetta
Greetings!

My name is Pujan Mapchan. I am a public health student. I have lived in Gros Morne, Haiti for one year. When I return back there at the end of this month, I want to work on a public health project. However, I really need your help to make this project possible.

Gros Morne is a small town and many people live in the surrounding rural areas where there are no roads and electricity. Many people travel for miles by foot or if there are decent roads and they have some money to pay, they can hire a small motorcycle to  get to the town if they need medical care. In rural Haiti there is a great need for health and education. Please allow me to explain briefly about my project.

I will be creating a Village Health Workers (VHW) project with the help of community members in rural Haiti. A VHW is a person whose goal is to improve and promote better health for their family and community. Anyone could be a VHW, but they need to be able to educate people about what they learned in their trainings such as the prevention of illnesses, personal hygiene, nutrition which also includes gardening, safe drinking water, women's health, family planning, and more.

The main goal of VHWs project is to take small actions to change the general health of the people in rural Haiti. Most of the VHWs are illiterate, we want to encourage them to work towards improving health for themselves, their families and community. VHWs are the educators, but they are also an example for promoting better and healthier habits in their communities. They can really make a significant difference among the people who are in need of basic health care. Access to general health practices in remote areas is achievable if we utilize VHWs in a sustainable way.

Like many other developing countries, there are a large number of people who suffer and die from preventable illnesses in Haiti. There are not many doctors, nor are there enough medical personnel coming to hold clinics in the remote countryside. Therefore, there is a tremendous need for health care education. The VHW Project can benefit the people living in Haiti.  This project could really make a difference in general health for the villagers. Without your help this project is not possible. Please, if you can help me raise some donations, it would really go a long way.  Donations of any size, large or small are really appreciated!

My goal is to raise $ 3000 and all of that money will go to the health educators, transportation for VHWs and rental space for the training.
Details:  12 VHWs trained by 6 health educators, for 2 trainings per month + a review session (VHWs come, but no trainer). For 6 months plan.

Health experts twice per month = $ 50/month per trainer. Total = $400
Trainer focus: preventable illnesses; hygiene; clean drinking water; nutrition; family planning; and women's health.
Transportation: 12 VHWs come 18 times = 216 visits = $ 1600
Materials = $ 200
Rental space 2x month = $ 300
Food = $ 600
Total = $3000

I believe that a small investment in this project will have a huge impact on the health of rural villagers in Haiti.

Please contact me if you have further questions.

Thank you in advance!
