Stephanie's Medical Recovery

Donation protected
Stephanie Valenzuela, 20 years old, was mutilated with a box cutter by her husband on September 6. He sliced open her stomach and hands, as his reasoning for cutting Stephanie open was to rip out their future child from her womb. At the time of the attack, a neighbor heard Stephanie’s screams and called 911. Upon arrival, officers had to tourniquet Stephanie’s abdomen with a shirt to prevent any more severe blood loss. Doctors and nurses worked tirelessly to not only save Stephanie’s life, without deficits, but to also save the life of her future child. After a week in the ICU, Stephanie returned home to continue her recovery.

Stephanie graduated El Monte High School in 2015 and attended East Los Angeles Community College the same year to become a nurse. During her childhood, she spent time making friends and playing soccer. She speaks fondly of her memories on the field as she and her friends would run up and down the field laughing at whatever was happening in the game.

Close friends and family describe Stephanie as a good person and the light of their day. This tragedy has not wavered Stephanie’s attitude as she still smiles and laughs every day.

The next several months will require extensive physical therapy and various hospital visits as Stephanie prepares for the arrival of her baby. After this tragedy, Stephanie will be taking time away from work to allow her wounds to heal properly; however, her role of being the financial supporter of her family has been minimized.

Stephanie will be starting physical therapy within the next few weeks, while also undergoing emotional counseling. Donations will be used to cover medical expenses for Stephanie, as well the baby, who is expected to arrive in December. Donations will also help with expenses for the baby.

The severity of this situation is extreme. Your support is greatly appreciated. Thank you.
