On October 27th, my wife Andrea had a brain stem stroke. By the grace of God, her mom was home with her at the time and was able to call paramedics and comfort her. We’ve been to 5 different hospitals in Florida and are currently at the amazing Shepherd Center, a specialized rehab hospital for brain and spinal cord injury in Atlanta. Reality is going to hit hard pretty soon as we are looking at discharging in the near future.
I’m currently on leave from my job as an orchestra and guitar teacher at a middle school so that I can be with Andrea and also spend more time with our 3 kids.
Andrea is doing well but her complete rehab and restoration will take a lot of time. Two big things that the staff at Shepherd say are “if you’ve seen on brain injury, you’ve seen ONE brain injury” and “stroke recovery is measured in years, not months or weeks.” What this tells me is that a rehab program specifically designed for Andrea will work in time, but we just don’t know how much time it will take.
