Today, September 18th, is Vasi's 18th Birthday! But, he does not have the privilege, which most young adults take for granted to celebrate vibrantly and look forward to college and life's opportunities. He is faced with fighting a life-threatening battle which most dread to hear, the C-word.
A few weeks ago, he was enjoying vacation time with his family in Romania just before starting his senior year in High School. While on this trip he complained of right side pain which quickly became unbearable and had to go to the local emergency room. There, he was suspected of liver cancer, but further testing was warranted once back in the states. Once he arrived home, he was seen at Seattle Children's Emergency Room and the diagnosis was again highly suspected of metastatic liver cancer. He was soon followed by his oncologist.
Just 10 years ago this month, Vasi and his 10 siblings lost their mother (34 years old) to colon cancer. The oldest daughter was 16 years old and the youngest was less than 1 year old. During this family's turmoil it was recommended that all 11 siblings be tested for Familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP), a genetic predisposition to colon cancer if left untreated. Vasi underwent the colectomy procedure less than 2 years ago which did not require chemotherapy or radiation as the polys were determined to be pre-cancerous. Unfortunately, the cancerous cells have spread forming innumerable masses in the liver and potentially spreading to other parts of his body.
Vasi's oldest sister, Esty (26) has chosen to put her nursing school and job on hold to be by her brother's bedside. As we can only imagine the financial and emotional stress such diagnosis can bring to a family, please consider to come alongside in prayer and financial support.
