Restoring and Improving Children’s Education after Cyclone Harold
Just before Easter, while the world dealt with the coronavirus, Category 5 Cyclone Harold slammed into the Vanuatu islands of Santo, Malo and Malekula tearing apart lives. The devastation to homes, schools and infrastructure in Luganville, Vanuatu’s second biggest city, and countless villages was extreme. Initial reports and aerial surveys show damage to 90% of structures and food gardens. Thankfully most people hid in secure cyclone shelters during the storm, keeping the death toll to 2. However, in one of the poorest countries in the world, rebuilding is going to be incredibly difficult.
While the local authorities work to restore infrastructure, and people gather what they need to rebuild homes, the local schools, which already suffer from a lack of resources are not likely to get much assistance. Children will suffer unless schools are restored and restocked.
For the past six years, The Library Project Vanuatu has been working with local communities across Vanuatu to install life-changing libraries in schools. Vanuatu volunteers work with school communities as they build strong buildings to safely house the books. Australian volunteers collect, sort, label and ship tens of thousands of books to village schools. Over the past six years the project has seen 35 libraries installed in schools that had little or no prior access to books. The improvement in school results has been impressive.
The Library Project Vanuatu has now packed a 40” shipping container with shelving and books, desks, chairs and other school furniture for which will assist schools in Santo, Malo and Malekula. These supplies will replace items destroyed by Cyclone Harold and improve educational opportunities for over 2000 children.
The group holds an annual Trivia and Silent Auction Night which raises most of the money for shipping. However, due to the COVID-19 lockdown, and the tough conditions faced by supporting businesses, the group is unable to use this fundraiser to collect the money needed to ship the container to Santo, Malo and Malekula.

This is how your donation will change lives:
$1500: You enable a library to be shipped to a school.
$200: You ship a full fiction category to an impoverished school.
$80: You ship a full non-fiction category to a needy school.
$40: You provide one shelf of books in a school library.
$30: You get a child up off the floor and onto a desk and a chair.
