Vanessa's Medical Mystery and Journey

Hello all,

Vanessa Waker is one of my dearest friends. She is a hard-working employee for the Veteran Health Administration, a mother of 2 and a wife to Mike who is a police officer. They just had finished up an addition to their house, and spent most of what was in savings to pay for that, when Vanessa started to experience a medical mystery. In the past 5 weeks, she has had fevers that spike every 5-6 hours. These can be anywhere from 100 to 104.7. They are debilitating. She was in the ER 3 times in the first three weeks before they finally admitted her. She spent 2 weeks in the hospital as they ran all kinds of tests. While going through all this fluid began to surround the lungs and heart, her spleen is enlarged, and her liver is struggling. They tried all kinds of IV broad-spectrum antibiotics to no avail. Infectious disease was called in and ran all kinds of tests. Next was the oncologist and that led to more tests, fluid removal from the lungs, and a bone marrow biopsy. Then finally a rheumatologist. She was released last Friday and given medication for a rare disease called Stills disease. However, as of today, there is no relief, fevers are still ongoing, and she remains extremely weak. They have also received more test results saying she also has HLH disease which must now be treated with steroids and chemotherapy pills. As you can imagine the hospital bills will be rolling in soon. She does have insurance but this will not cover all of the past visits nor will it pay for all of her drug treatments. She has used all her time off and at this point, there is no end in sight. She has many doctor appointments ahead. Right now she is basically bedridden. She has to have her family help her to even shower, as she is so weak. I am sure they may end up needing more than this Go Fund Me, but she is hoping to get back to at least some part-time work in the next few weeks. However, it is not looking that way.
