Our dearest Vandana Lal passed away on April 06, 2020 after a valiant battle with Cancer. Not once, but twice. We, her friends, are here to help memorialize what she meant to us and give her immediate family the help and support we can, during this most difficult time and for the myriad tasks that lie ahead.
There are friends and there is family. And then there are friends who become family. Vandana, Vandi, Vandu or simply Bubble was one of them. You might have known her by different names but she was the same to all of us. Those big eyes always full of enthusiasm. That amazing smile which drew people in. That vivacious voice that announced her presence. She will be greatly missed.
Vandana was born in India and made deep friends everywhere she went. From Mater Dei to DPS to Delhi University to business trips to Australia to meeting Vikas in Chicago in 1999 and living in NoVA. She was at the center of Oak Hill families and along with Vikas, Ishika and Misha, active in the communities of Crossfield Elementary, Rachel Carson Middle, and Oakton High schools. Maybe you worked with her, maybe you were her maid of honor, her relative, her neighbor, her college buddy, her confidant, her close school-mom friend, her daily chat buddy, her basketball and athletics teammate or even her partner at playing Charades. Either way we all knew Vandana as a great wife, a fabulous mom, a loving daughter, the coolest sister and an amazing friend to so many of us.
It is a testament to her courage that as she lay in bed in her final days, despite having lost her eyesight and the use of most function, she still had a sharp sense of humor and positive attitude towards everything. She knew she was waning but in her irrepressible style said “When you get lemons, you make lemonade. And if you are handed more lemons, then you just make some more”. She loved to talk. “Arrrre, tell me more about such and such”. “When are we taking that cruise we always planned?”. “No problem Yaar. I should be out of bed soon and I hear the girl’s trip to Vegas calling”.
They say whom God loves, die young. But what about us? We adored Vandana equally. She leaves a void in our lives. But, in this moment of grief we are here for Vikas, Ishika and Misha. Our hearts are heavy but the moment calls us. We have a worthy goal. As marvelous as Vandana herself.
