We lost our Mum, Wife, Sister, Auntie and friend Val, very suddenly to advanced cancer.
Whilst we can never fill the void, we want to ensure we can do everything we can to help us all get a step closer to preventing this happening to others in the future, and one day hope that cancer can be beaten by all.
A family friend of ours, Dr William Li, is leading the Angiogenesis Foundation, with a primary focus on prevention and early diagnosis of cancer. Something we strongly feel would have helped keep Val with us all for many more years. For this reason, Dr William Li has offered to work with us to run some pioneering research in Val's honour, focusing on early detection, and use the money we raise to ultimately help us and future generations to beat this disease.
Angiogenesis is the natural development of new blood vessels in our bodies. However it has been discovered that cancer cells will use this process against us, they actually give out growth factors that will trigger the body to grow new blood vessels specifically to feed them, allowing them to grow aggressively into life threatening tumours. The Angiogenesis foundation's work focuses on preventing the blood supply becoming available to the cancers in the first place, and also works to find faster and cheaper ways of diagnosing the disease before it gains momentum. Treatments can rapidly cut off any blood supply to the dangerous cells or tumours, leaving them to shrink away. The foundation has already delivered significant breakthroughs with 37 new treatments saving 50 million lives.
Preventing the disease is the number one focus, but cancer is still a huge risk for many of us and early detection is vital. We will forever ask ourselves, would Val still be here with us had we detected her cancer sooner.
