2020 has hit us all like a ton of bricks. Yet, for many in Central America, the pandemic struck and developed against a backdrop of violence and insecurity, tropical storms and hurricanes, lack of financial security and severely lacking health and educational infrastructure.
In El Salvador alone, estimates are that the GDP will see a 6-8% decrease, far above the global average, and it all points to the possibility that more than 500,000 families will fall into poverty, a fourth of them to extreme poverty. What does this mean in practice?
It means thousands not having the option to stay home, and thereby exposing themselves, because they rely on their daily earnings to cover their bare essentials. It means hundreds of families having to make hard decisions to cut expenses that might seem a luxury to them in a time like this, such as going to school. Before the pandemic, families already faced difficulties to access quality education. But now, for many, it has become almost impossible.
About a year ago, I heard the story of Fabiola, a small girl living in the municipality of Ataco. Her family did not have $5 a month to pay for her tuition in a local school. The idea that we might be missing out on the potential and talent of these children because they did not have the equivalent to a cup of coffee to go to school has haunted me since.
This year, we reached out to the school, and they confirmed that more and more families have approached them to inquire after opportunities for financial aid since they do not currently have enough to send their kids to school next year (academic years in ES run from January - October).
That is why we are partnering with Colegio Cristiano Josue , in Ataco, El Salvador, and looking to give the gift of education this Christmas!
We are setting a fundraising goal of $325 CAD (approx $250 USD) so we can sponsor a child's entire academic year (10 months) including tuition, uniforms, school supplies, and books. All donations will be matched dollar for dollar up to $100 to double the impact of your gift!
Please note that while this is the fundraising goal, we would be delighted if we could surpass it and sponsor more than one child! Every $250 USD ($325 CAD) raised will offer a complete ride for one student. Every dollar will make a huge difference in the lives of these children, their families, the nation and ultimately, the world.
