On Saturday March 9th, Roland noticed a flash in his right eye which is a sign of a torn or detached retina. He went to the ER and was lucky enough that an eye doctor was willing to open his office to check his eye. He found that Roland in fact had a detached retina in the right eye and a full cataract on his left "bad" eye. We call this his bad eye because when Roland was 18 he had a detached retina and had a scleral buckle sewed on to connect the retina back. We were never told he had a cataract or we would have fixed it a long time ago, we always just thought that was the best it would be.
We were lucky enough to get into a retina doctor on that Monday. They saw him in the office and asked us to come back at 3pm for surgery. We choose to have an oil put in his eye because we could control the healing process and that he would be back to work in 2 to 3 weeks.
Fast forward almost 3 weeks later to oil removal surgery which was supposed to take only 15 minutes. Sitting in the waiting room was horrible almost an hour later the doctor comes out to deliver not so great news. When they removed the oil, they discovered a few tears. They used a laser and a gas bubble to fix it.
The gas bubble in the right eye and the cataract in the left eye made it almost impossible for Roland to be able to see anything at all. The gas bubble takes anywhere from 8 to 10 weeks to fully dissolve.
For almost a month he couldn't pick up our kids. He hasn't been able to drive or work since this all happened. We probably have another 3 weeks of him not working. He can't be with our kids alone, luckily we have been blessed with people helping me before and after work with the kids and a few dinners here and there. Without that help I would have gone completely crazy.
We have tried really hard the last 2 months to make ends meet but its becoming increasingly hard as time goes on. I know a lot of people can't help but just a quick prayer would be awesome.
