Help WA Homeless Families Shelter Safely Tonight

Spende geschützt
There are currently 100 homeless people in hotels across Perth, since the WA government closed the two tent cities in Perth and Fremantle in January. One camp burnt down  and police cleared out the other camp  on the state government's orders. These families have nowhere else to go, and the WA government promised to provide accommodation for “as long as necessary ".

But the owners of Perth City Apartments Hotel, where 40 people have been staying for weeks waiting for somewhere permanent to live, have been told the government won’t pay and they have to kick everyone out back on the street . This is despite there being no emergency accommodation available anywhere, let alone housing.

It costs $2000 per day to keep these 40 vulnerable people safely accommodated and off the street. If the WA government doesn’t care about the most vulnerable people in our community, the community will have to step up and do it for them. Please help us keep highly vulnerable families safe until they can be safely housed. And please demand the government accommodates families in crisis and provides the housing they need to keep their children safe and well.

All funds raised from this crowdfunder will support emergency accommodation costs for people who have been homeless on Perth streets during a year of pandemic and lockdowns.

About Me.

I am a recently retired hospital nurse and began working with this issue during the month of January 2021 at the Fremantle Tent City.  In late January the government negotiated to accommodate all of the people at the tent city and peacefully dismantled the site. This was done hastily and in a disorganized manner, resulting in many people not making it onto the Department of Community Services 'List' for emergency accommodation. I witnessed the entire process in person and saw a great deal of people miss out on the opportunity for support.

How the Funds will be spent.

The owner of a city hotel has graciously and generously accommodated these vulnerable people and the hotel costs are being paid for by this GoFundMe campaign.

The support given at this hotel has given the residents there a sense of community, belonging and for most has given them a sense of value to the wider community. These people are made up of mostly highly vulnerable people with pre existing health conditions, families with young children and others with disabilities. The owner of the hotel is so uniquely suited to dealing with a group of people with multifactorial issues and his ability and aptitude in this crisis is second to none. My own involvement with him has only begun in January 2021. I now consider him a true friend.

To imagine an excess of funds would be a dream come true for me but in all reality, we have more people asking for assistance than resources at present. These include women and pre school age children, people fleeing domestic violence and others with more complex issues and disabilities. All of the funds raised in this campaign will be paid to the owner of the city hotel providing this emergency accommodation. In the rare event that there is an excess of funds, the funds will be used to provide support such as furniture, bedding, clothing and the like, once people are housed.

The benefits already.

So far I have witnessed many positive effects and stories resulting from the hotel accommodation provided. People look healthier, stronger, less stressed, well slept, they say they feel safe and that their mental health is significantly improved. This is also obvious to me just at a glance. People have applied for FIFO work, addressed long term health issues they haven't had time to before, families have reunited and so much more. Others have already found permanent housing and now that there is a central location for services to find these people, many are accessing services efficiently for the first time in years.

One of the greatest rewards for me to witness during this campaign has been to see homeless people moved to tears when I tell them that the go fund me page is increasing daily. Somehow in all of this crisis, just to know that people actually care...people in the community...has had the biggest impact on these individuals' sense of worth. Your generosity is changing lives every day.
