Help ACAP continue to support Black British youths

Tax deductible
OUR STORY:

The African Caribbean Achievement Project (ACAP) is a grass-roots independent charity established in 1995. ACAP started following a huge increase in the number of young Black boys who were being excluded from school at the time because of unfair school practices - with no alternative provision put in place for the children affected by this unfair policy.

A group of Bradford community activists came together to create ACAP; an organisation that would specifically address this issue and work to help them navigate the racial difficulties they were experiencing in the classroom and beyond.

WHAT WE DO:

For the last 25 years our volunteer-led charity has worked tirelessly providing services to children, young people and their families in the areas of education, health, advocacy and support as well as community projects in the arts, culture and heritage and sports field.

ACAP recruits, trains and deploys adult volunteers (role models) from the local community to mentor disadvantaged young people from Yorkshire and across the UK. Current services include mentoring and classroom support, drop-in advice service, homework support, STEM classes, holiday play schemes.

Through government grants we’ve been able to execute various projects in the past 12 months including: therapeutic arts and crafts, an eco-upcycling project, women's cycling group and Windrush project.

WHY WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT:

ACAP is 100% volunteer-run, and over the past 25 years we’ve relied on the generosity of our local community, volunteers and small charitable Trusts who support our work. Like many other smaller charities, we miss out on funding that is earmarked for bigger charities and survive on a shoestring from year to year.

We need to raise money to pay for a new boiler in our building as our current one is over 20 years old and stopped working 3 years ago. We’re unable to keep the space warm enough during the winter months, which is inconvenient and distressing for our service users. Our roof is also caving in and needs urgent repair. We have been fundraising for this at a local level and have raised just under £700 so far but this does not even scratch the surface of what we need.

We are appealing for support to keep essential services going, particularly as we deal with the damaging effects of Covid-19 and the disproportionate impact it has had on black children. We seek urgent help to keep our charity going and also to bounce back so that we can continue to provide much needed services for the African and Caribbean community across the UK.

Thank you in advance for your support in helping us to save ACAP.
